High-Iron Recovery for Modern Steel Mills

For many steel manufacturers, mill scale represents a frustrating paradox: it is rich in iron (often >70% Fe), yet frequently ends up as a landfill cost due to fines, oil contamination, or logistics bottlenecks.

Waste Optima changes that equation. We provide end-to-end management for mill scale and steel sludge, connecting your facility with a network of beneficial reuse outlets—from cement kiln feedstock to sintering plants and briquetting operations. Whether you generate clean flake or oily sludge, we structure programs that prioritize landfill diversion and operational efficiency.

Material Valuation & Outlets

Material Type Description Typical Outlet Economic Status
Dry Mill Scale (Flake) High Fe (>70%), Low Oil (<1%) Sinter Plant / Counterweights Purchase / Rebate
Scale Fines Undersized material, Clean Briquetting / Cement Kiln Neutral / Low Rebate
Oily Sludge High Moisture & Oil Content Cement Kiln (Energy Recovery) Service Fee
Pit Clean-out Mixed debris, soil, & scale Beneficial Reuse / Landfill Service Fee

Core Services

1. Beneficial Reuse & Recycling

We don't just dump your waste; we find it a home. By analyzing the chemistry of your stream (Fe content, moisture, and oil), we route material to:

  • Cement Manufacturing: Using iron units as a raw material for clinker production.

  • Sinter Plant Feedstock: Returning iron units to the blast furnace cycle.

  • Counterweight & Aggregates: High-density applications for concrete and ballast.

2. Briquetting & Agglomeration

Loose mill scale fines can be difficult to handle and impossible to remelt directly due to baghouse issues. We coordinate toll-processing and briquetting services to convert your fines into a dense, charge-ready product that can be re-introduced into your Electric Arc Furnace (EAF), closing the loop on your own waste.

3. Rail & Heavy Haul Logistics

Mill scale is heavy. Inefficient transport destroys value. We specialize in high-volume logistics:

  • Rail: Gondola and hopper car coordination for consistent, high-tonnage movements.

  • Trucking: End-dumps and roll-offs for local/regional movements.

  • Barge: Waterway logistics for large-scale export or domestic transfer.

How It Works: The Process

  1. Assessment: We review your estimated monthly tonnage and current handling method.

  2. Sampling: We analyze a representative sample for Iron (Fe), Oil, and Moisture content.

  3. Logistics Plan: We propose the most efficient transport mode (Rail vs. Truck).

  4. Execution: We schedule regular pickups aligned with your production shifts.

  5. Reporting: You receive monthly weight tickets and diversion reports.

Mill Scale FAQs

How do you determine the value of our mill scale?

Valuation is primarily driven by Iron (Fe) content and physical consistency. "Clean flake" typically commands a purchase price (rebate), while "oily sludge" or high-moisture fines may require a service fee to cover handling and processing. We provide transparent pricing based on lab analysis.

Can you handle oily mill scale?

Yes. While oil contamination limits direct recycling back into steelmaking (due to baghouse risks), it is often a desirable feedstock for cement kilns. The hydrocarbons provide energy value while the iron is incorporated into the product.

Do you offer on-site briquetting?

For mills with sufficient volume, we can explore on-site briquetting partnerships. For smaller volumes, we utilize a network of off-site toll processors to agglomerate your fines.

What documentation do you provide?

You will receive bills of lading (BOLs) for every shipment and a monthly diversion summary detailing tonnage moved and the final method of recycling. This supports your ISO 14001 and ESG reporting requirements.
